BARSHAM BARNS lie in a tranquil little river valley, almost in a world of their own, about a mile from the medieval village of Little Walsingham. They were part of a large historic farming estate and are surrounded by the protected lands of Walsingham Priory. These magnificent barns have been brought back to life by an award-winning architect who has created elegant retreats that marry the best of traditional Norfolk materials with contemporary building and design.

THE BARNS

The Great East Barn (sleeps 14) was converted from the massive 19th century granary. From the luxurious comfort of the first floor sitting room, where the rustic clunch walls set off crisp modern furnishings, you can gaze out across calm green fields and grazing sheep. In this barn, country meets city by combining designer details with vernacular building techniques. May be booked with Long Meadow to accommodate 22.

July and August Saturday to Saturday bookings only.

High Barsham (sleeps 12) was once a threshing barn but has now been transformed into spacious living accommodation. Bronze lanterns and coloured glass illuminate the embroidered cushions and carved wooden antiques of the interior, combining contemporary detail with a cool and easy eastern influence.

July and August Saturday to Saturday bookings only.

Grey’s Court (sleeps 10) is a very spacious single-storey brick and flint building has been converted from the old stables, and has dreamy views across undulating meadow to the little Victorian flint church over the valley. Its generously proportioned and panelled main rooms have a cool Scandinavian mood, decorated in relaxing shades of blue and green for a calm and comfortable atmosphere.

July and August Friday to Friday bookings only.

Long Meadow (sleeps 8) was most recently the milking parlour and, dating from 1715, is the oldest property on the farm. The barn has clunch walls, a local chalk building material, which gives it unique character. This barn has an elegant but relaxed French country feel, blending colour and texture to create a charming and welcoming atmosphere. May be booked with The Great East Barn to accommodate 22.

July and August Saturday to Saturday bookings only.

Little Barsham (sleeps 4) was in the past used for rearing lambs and sheltering sheep. This barn has an intimate rural atmosphere: sunny cottage in summer or snug hideaway in winter. Built from traditional Norfolk brick and flint, there are exposed beams and big picture windows with more contemporary touches.

July and August Friday to Friday bookings only.

A gentle fifteen minute walk, following in the footsteps of Henry VIII, takes you to the medieval village of Little Walsingham, visited by pilgrims from around the world since its foundation in 1061.

Only five miles away is the unspoilt North Norfolk coast with its various beaches, from sandy to shingle: Wells-next-the-Sea with its huts and lagoons; the Georgian town of Burnham Market for fashion and interiors, as well as two very good restaurants; you can learn to sail and windsurf at Brancaster or Morston; there are seals at Blakeney Point, great bird watching at Cley and endless walks on the famous Holkham beach; besides the outstanding National Trust properties at Blickling and Felbrigg, there are Pensthorpe, Houghton Hall, Holkham and Sandringham and their gardens to be explored. Four miles away is the busy market town of Fakenham that retains its weekly auction with a farmers’ market on the last Saturday of the month and a racecourse which holds regular meets.
